It was never their intention to become comedians.
For Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen, that happened incidentally.
In 1968, Dreesen, an insurance salesman, was a member of his local Chicago chapter of the Junior Chamber (Jaycees). At one meeting, he proposed starting a drug-education class for kids. Having had a rough childhood himself, he knew the importance of community outreach.
