AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - APRIL 02: Guide dog p...

When I was at JV Alert, I met a lot of people. I was talking with Couch Surfing Ori. He “couch surfs” – which for the uninitiated means that he travels around and crashes on couches all over the place. His blog is CouchSurfingOri.com, in case you would like to find out about his latest travels.

What fun it is to meet people with wildly different lifestyles. Ori couch surfs, Gina and Bill ride around the country in a motor home full time…and here am I in my little house in the Ozarks listening to the roosters sing in the middle of the day.

One of the other guys there at JV Alert at the networking breakfast was Dave Gonzales. I really didn’t get to talk to him much, but Ori said Dave’s 8–year-old daughter Eirene was a budding entrepreneur. She asked Ori’s help, saying, “I’m not asking you for money but I want a puppy and my dad says I have to earn $30 per month, and if I do, he’ll let me get a puppy.”

Ori asked her how much she had made so far, and at the time it was only 10 cents, far from her goal. “What did you do to earn the dime?” he asked her.

“I put the dishes away,” she told him.

It would take a LOT of dish-putting-away to earn $30, so Ori suggested she use her love and skill in art to have an online store.

So, right now please support a budding entrepreneur who is learning the power of earning money in her own business at such a young age and visit Eirene’s Store. You can buy cards and mugs from her with her artwork on it. I got a nice fall mug today.

The URL to share is http://budurl.com/artcards.

What makes her efforts social entrepreneurship? While funding her puppy with her art cards and mugs, Eirene is giving a portion of the proceeds to her local animal shelter. This means she has a for-profit business that is also doing good for the community at the same time. Since she is funding her puppy, it only makes sense that she would support a shelter.

Congratulations, Dave for raising a budding entrepreneur who knows enough to tap into her support community (in this case, Couch Surfing Ori) for assistance in funding her puppy. I know it was your birthday, and she had already made a few dollars.

Now…I want to know…did she earn her $30 in September? I hope Ori and Dave will keep me posted.
