How do you prepare a book for publishing?

Since I know a lot of people wonder about this, I want to share with you the journey of getting my next book ready for publishing. I’ll share everything with you. First – you may want to know what the book is about.

What’s the book about?

The book is currently an ebook for reasons I’ll mention in a moment.  I’ve created a simple system for how to write a book that explodes your business  While anyone can make an audio, transcribe it and slap a book together, that doesn’t mean it will give you the proper leverage and positionnig. Most books fall flat aprtly because they are not designed properly.

The Instant Credibility System teaches you to first create the vision for your business, determine what your profit funnel will be, and know your customer before you jump in and write.

Audience My audience is entrepreneurs, coaches, speakers, professionals and industry leaders  who want to find out how to write a book simply yet effectively.

Why start with an ebook?

  1. By starting with an ebook, I can accomplish a few goals with one stroke:
  2. An early edition of the book working for me
  3. while I perfect the print edition
  4. while getting feedback from people who have paid me for the ebook,
  5. creating buzz,  and
  6. gathering back cover quotes and joint venture partners for the print book,
  7. AND – I’m making money from my sales and affiliate sales!.

From ebook to pbook

When preparing to transition from an ebook to a print book, first, you have to realize how people experience a book and make a buying decision. The rules are different for ebooks and print books.

When you’re selling an ebook, you need a strong sales letter. When you have a book in hand, the title starts the sales process.

For the ebook, Instant Credibility is a good title – but not for print. Becoing the author of a book does indeed give you instant credibility.

But for print, that title isn’t “sexy” enough. It needed a facelift.

How to Choose a Title for Your Print Book

The title is the first attention-grabber. It has to stop someone dead in their tracks – stop the monkey brain that is so full of texts and emails and taking the kids here and there and working and on and on … so they will say, “What’s that?”

I thought about what writing a book does for an entrepreneur or industry expert. It is your all access pass, it opens the world to you. It makes you an Instant VIP.

Ah – I had my title – Instant VIP. Great – now for the subtitle.

I’m still working on that one – and I’ll offer to have you help me wiht it in another post -

But the subtitle has a big job.

It has to share a promise of delivering a real solution to the reader in such a way that they would willingly crawl over broken glass to have the outcome. The book is really about the subtitle more than the title.

Look at one of my favorite titles, The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich. The book is not so much about the 4 hour work week as it is escaping 9-5 etc.

The Book Buying Process

Whether you’re in a “real” bricks and mortar bookstore or an online  bookseller, you unconsciously go through a process in determining whether or not to buy a book.

  1. Front cover -     titl – subtitle
  2. Back cover -      endorsements -  description
  3. Table of Contents
  4. Inside the book

As I complete other tasks, I am making sure the cover of my book will do its job well. I’m not quite dealing with the cover design yet, but I am working on the back cover material right now.

Seeking Endorsements

I am reaching out to just the right people to seek endorsements for teh book, such as these people, (listed in no particular order):

  • Jason Oman
  • Mark Joyner
  • Gina Gaudio Graves
  • Robert Allen
  • Dr. Ben Mack
  • Willie Crawford
  • Matt Bacak
  • Warren Whitlock
  • Ken McArthur
  • Tracy Repchuk
  • Bob Burg
  • Mike Litman
  • John Di Lemme
  • John Kremer
  • readers of the ebook
  • others who offer
  • probably a few others I didn’t think of here

Will they all say yes?  I have no idea, but a “no” won’t kill or injure me.

I have some yeses alredy adn more people to ask. I’ll use the quotes about the book for the cover and for promotional materials.

My next task, and the topic of the next post in this series, is getting a foreword for the bok.
