Social Media and Narcissism: Are You a Twitter Egomaniac?

The Story Lady on Twitter

Today I received a note from one of my Facebook groups saying that if I followed the group owner on Twitter, (I won’t name names), I could win a coaching session. OK, that’s cool. Whether I win or not, I know this person. Now that I know she’s on Twitter, I’d follow her anyway.

When I follow an industry leader on Twiter, in particular, I read a page of their tweets (messages, in case you don’t know the Twitter lingo). Then I find something where I can make a natural reply, or where I can “retweet” (spread a message) that I believe my tribe would want to know.

So I went to her Twitter page, and, well, I about gagged. She’s the living reincarnation of Narcissus (metaphor example).

“I did this.” “I am doing that.” “So-and-so hired me to blablabla.”

Ok, yeah, I know. Twitter asks you, “What are you doing?” So this should be natural. Except we’re talking about an industry guru here. It’s very clear from reading an entire page of her tweets that all she cares about is herself.

How can I say that?

The way you’ll learn to tweet if you hang around me at all is to do things like this:

  • Share interesting articles, videos, etc. that your people would find relevant.
  • Find resources, tools and, yes, products that people are asking for or needing.
  • Serve your audience by thinking of why they would follow you and what they need.
  • Focus on providing value, not just on saying what you’re doing.
  • Share the joy of people who’ve made awesome things happen because of your work together.

What is Missus Narcissus doing? —> read more.

This person is falling into the typical, traditional way of pushy marketing:

  • No sharing of great resources (other than her inimitable self, of course).
  • WAY too much “salesy” content.
  • No sharing of how she’s helping people change their lives (except from HER perspective).
  • A walk through Egoville.

And I’m left wanting to gag.

You saw above how to be of value to your Twitter followers. Please be like that and not like the ego coach.

  1. Thanks for the article storylady and I TOTALLY agree. I just started twitter but when I first joined I thought “why do I care what people are eating for dinner or watching on TV” Now I know how to pick and choose the people that provide interesting content and now it’s become really addictive. Thanks for writing this…Happy to “follow” you. ;-)
