John Di Lemme has some amazing tricks up his sleeve for being an effective public speaker.
When I was at JV Alert Live last year, I invested in an extra luncheon series. John was one of the speakers, and naturally, he was a class act even before you stepped into the room.

What are some of his top strategies? I’ll tell you.
And, the really funny thing is that last night I found that one of his techniques EVEN works on chickens. Read more —>
Tip #1: Be Professional.
Come across as a professional speaker, not an amateur.
Tip #2: Bring a lot of pens.
Everyone should have a pen that writes, but be sure to have pens with you that you can give out if needed.
Tip #3: Bring your own clicker.
Don’t rely on any equipment you don’t normally use. You may hit the wrong button in your presentation, and that isn’t the message you want to send.
tip #4: Dress for Success.
Dress sharp. Look like you’re there to do business, not go to a barbecue.
Tip #5: Turn off the screen when you want to get the crowd’s attention.
At key points in his presentations, John will click off the screen. That immediately draws attention to him.
Now, I have to tell you the story of why chickens are featured in the title of this blog.
Last night around 2 AM I heard all 11 hens BOKing like crazy. fearing that there might be a snake in the coop or some other danger, I threw on a robe, grabbed a knife, and ran out to the coop.
What a cacophony! Such noisy hens! Normally asleep at that hour, I have no idea what set them off, but they were definitely stirred up.
Once I ascertained that they were in no danger, I wanted them to settle and go back to sleep.
Don’t ask me how or why this came to me – maybe it was because the hens are a lot like a conference crowd – but John Di Lemme’s room-quieting technique came to mind.
“Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh” I intoned, and within seconds, the BOKing died down. After 1 more “Shhhhhhhhh”, there were only a few more boks, much less agitated. One final “shhh” and they went quiet.
