Why Does An Author Need a Blog for their Book Launch?

I just talked with one of my tribe who found me when he requested a free gift I offered.  He took a class from me last year, and we keep in touch. I consider him a friend as well.  He attended the book launch webinar, which you can hear and see right here, and he requested a strategy session with me about his plans for his book.

Today we had a conversation about the book he is writing. He’s still creating is now. He has his table of contents and has the basis for the other products/services he will offer after the book, and he’s wondering about blogging. He has the next phases in mind.  As an author, this is exactly what you need to do.  I’ll write about that more later, in another post.

He asks me,

“What’s the difference between a blog and a website?”

I explain to him that the main difference between a blog and a typical website is that the blog content is refreshed frequently (by you) and the website is static. You only change its content occasionally. People come back to a blog because you put up “posts” (aticles) of interest to them.

“Why does an author need to have a blog?”

You have a blog because you want to show your audienceyour ideal readersthat you know your stuff and that you’re talking about things about which they care.  You are relevant. And you want link love on Google so that people know that you are worthy of their attention.

So he asks me,

“When should I start blogging my book? Should I wait until I’m done?”

You can start blogging your book anytime you want.  The sooner the better.  Why?

“Why should I start blogging my book sooner rather than later?”

  • Because People need to “feel you”/ sniff you out/ get to know you.  Nowadays people tend to be cynicalbut if they can see that you’re busy creating interesting content and they like what they experience, they’re more likely to pay attention
  • Because you want LOTS of links pointing to you: When someone googles your name, or they google a keyword relevant to your work, you want them to find you.  Imagine if you published a book and only had the Amazon listing for it.  Someone sees your book and Googles you and ocmes up with nothing but the book.  “This must not be anyone important. They’re not listed anywhere” is what they’ll think. Your credibility will be tankedunless you’re creating links and reasons to click.
  • Because you have to be relevant, and blogging keeps your mind and your ideas fresh
  • Because people can comment on a blog and interact iwth you
  • Because you absolutely must build a reputation as an author expert (even fiction authors)
  • because your platform is essential.  This goes back to relevance. Your platform is what you stand for, and it is what connects you with the timely issues of the day.
  • Because people WANT interaction with an approachable author expert, and that means you need to be “out there” where people can find you.

You definitely want to include blogging in your book launch plans.  If you need help setting one up, please drop me a direct message on Twitter with your email (I’m @TheStoryLady) or write me, or call 1-877-252-5062 or Skype rondadel..

“Will you help me learn to blog?”

I offer a live training every week for my book launch clients.  and the topic for November 25th is blogging.  I’ll walk you through how to create excellent blog posts, use your key words and blog your book and your platform.

I do a live training call for my clients every week. One week is a training, the next is open Q&A. This is only one aspect of what I do for an author’s book launch, but it is an important one.

“Will you talk with me about MY book?”

Yes!  If you would like a strategy session with me about your launch, please call me toll free 1-877-252-5062 or twitter @TheStoryLad.
