<p><em>Do you think you should be mild or bold?</em></p>
<p>There&#8217;s this entrepreneur I have mentioned before, whom I call Natasha. You might have met someone like her.</p>
<p><a title="Writing Tips: Should I Be Mild or Opinionated?" href="http://www.profitablestorytelling.com/easywrite" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-43614" style="margin: 15px;" title="Writing Tips: Should I Be Mild or Opinionated?" src="http://www.profitablestorytelling.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/opinion-253x300.jpg" alt="Writing Tips: Should I Be Mild or Opinionated?" width="253" height="300" /></a>I have a great respect for Natasha&#8217;s expertise. She is most definitely an expert in her field. She has strong opinions, and that is a good thing!</p>
<p><strong>Why Be Opinionated?</strong></p>
<p>Natasha is not afraid to give her opinion. Reading her <a target=_blank href="http://www.profitablestorytelling.com/glossary/?Term=Blogging" title="Definition for Blog: Blogging means using a blog (web log/diary/site just like this one) to write about a particular topic. This could be sharing your thoughts, rants and opinions, business blogging, or raving about your favorite Hollywood star or ho" rel="glossary" class=""><a target=_blank href="http://www.profitablestorytelling.com/glossary/?Term=Blogging" title="Definition for Blog: Blogging means using a blog (web log/diary/site just like this one) to write about a particular topic. This could be sharing your thoughts, rants and opinions, business blogging, or raving about your favorite Hollywood star or ho" rel="glossary" class="">blog</a></a> posts, she comes across as knowledgeable and astute. Her writing is clear. When she teaches steps, she is easily understandable.</p>
<p>Being an opinionated expert is a GOOD thing!</p>
<p>Being opinionated shows that the expert has gumption and that something to say. She knows her stuff and thus can lead others to expand their horizons.</p>
<p>Without opinions, you&#8217;re not truly an expert.</p>
<p>Whether others agree with you is not important. Those who are examples of the ideal customer will resonate with the message. They will buy from you and tell their friends about you as well.</p>
<p>Think of it this way. Those who disagree with the way you approach your subject would never be a customer or client anyway.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s an important consideration…</p>
<p><strong><em>Do You Show Up Differently in Writing VS in Person?</em></strong></p>
<p>Too often, an expert shows up (represents him or herself) one way in writing and very differently during a personal encounter.</p>
<p>Working online allows experts to expand their reach globally. Because of conference lines, webinars, Skype and other connection services, it is easier than ever to hear and see the expert instead of merely reading their words.</p>
<p>Talking to Natasha on a call brings a much different impression of her than reading her blog gives.</p>
<p>She comes across in a way that is haughty, as if she is a superior being suffering the company of idiots.</p>
<p><strong>Opinionated or Belittling?</strong></p>
<p>There is a difference between being an opinionated expert and belittling anyone who sees the world differently.</p>
<p>Hearing her talk, Natasha sounds as if she feels everyone else but her is an idiot who can scarcely breathe on their own.</p>
<p>Those smart ones who do as she says might one day be able to elevate themselves from subspecies status to barely sentient.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure that sounds harsh, yet that the way she comes across in my opinion. Dismissive. Not honoring their uniqueness and gifts.</p>
<p><strong><em>Are You Creating a Mismatch?</em></strong></p>
<p>Reading her articles made me think two different people had been talking. Expert Natasha and High-and-Mighty Natasha.</p>
<p>Remember that I first met her in person via a conference line. Later, I read her blog.</p>
<p>When I read several of her blog posts, I found them to be interesting. They did not sound like the condescending, dismissive  Natasha I had experienced.</p>
<p>I have tremendous respect for her knowledge and expertise. She definitely knows her stuff.</p>
<p>Imagine if you find someone interesting in writing and then hear them speak and experience them very differently from how they came across in writing.</p>
<p><em>How would you feel?</em></p>
<p>How you show up on a call or in a webinar needs to match what you write in your public works (blog posts, articles, and products).</p>
<p>Otherwise, you are misleading.</p>
<p><strong><em>Who Is The REAL You?</em></strong></p>
<p>Some people DO make a living out of crossing that line from opinionated expert to officious know-it-all.  Think of certain talk show hosts and political pundits.</p>
<p>There is room for this, too!</p>
<p>I am not saying it is bad to be officious if that is who you are. Be true to your nature. Only, if you cross that line, do it with full awareness and intention.</p>
<p>I personally do not want to do business with you if you are belittling, disrespectful and officious because that is not the experience I choose to have.</p>
<p>(I can whole-heartedly support someone&#8217;s right to express an opinion and yet not support them with my dollars!)</p>
<p>Let there be no surprises. When people read your words, let them come to know the <span style="text-decoration: underline;">real</span> you.</p>
<p><strong>Writing Tips for Being Authentically YOU</strong></p>
<p><strong>Here are 3 </strong><a href="http://www.profitablestorytelling.com/glossary" target="_blank"><strong>writing tips</strong></a><strong> to help you be authentically yourself in writing.</strong>:</p>
<p><strong>1. Step into your expert status before writing a word.</strong> You might find it easiest to truly be yourself if you TALK what you want to write instead of typing it. Be <span style="text-decoration: underline;">truly</span> yourself.</p>
<p>A tool such as <strong><a href="http://profitablestorytelling.com/copytalk" target="_blank">CopyTalk</a></strong> gives you a way to dictate anything, such as articles or blog posts in 4–minute chunks, and have it transcribed by real living humans and emailed to you.</p>
<p><strong>2. Definitively state your opinion</strong>. Be opinionated. Call it what it is from your perspective. You&#8217;ll cause the people who resonate with your approach to pay close attention.</p>
<p>Those who are not your ideal audience will leave you alone sooner or later.</p>
<p><strong>3. Be true to your nature. </strong> Be the same person in your writing you are when you deal with people directly.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a condescending person, do not hold that aspect of yourself back in your writing.</p>
<p>Those who appreciate that style will flock to you in droves! Those who do not appreciate your style will turn elsewhere. Win-win.</p>
<p><strong>My Opinion.</strong></p>
<p>Honor everyone&#8217;s right to their voice and their opinions, even if their ways are diametrically opposed to your own..</p>
<p>Be respectful of people&#8217;s differences. You need not agree or endorse their differences but merely allow and respect.</p>
<p>Give people the same freedom of self expression you yourself crave.</p>
<p>Understand that experience shapes behavior. Everyone is the way they are because of their life experience.</p>
<p>Recognize that every person alive (including the ones who do things that shock or offend you) is a <strong><a href="http://asktsl.com/gift" target="_blank">gift to the world</a></strong>!</p>

<p>Something that is designed to make life easier for a business owner, or even to convey useful information for customers can ultimately lead to dissatisfaction.</p>
<p>When you are going to be away from your desk, do you set up an email auto-reply that goes out to anyone who sends you an email? What does that message say?</p>

<p>You might have made 1 or more of the mistakes Peter Shankman, founder of HARO (Help A Reporter Out) at <a title="HARO Help A Reporter Out" href="http://www.HelpAReporter.com" target="_blank">www.HelpAReporter.com</a></p>
<p>A big thank you to Peter Shankman, who gives excellent advice about how not to irritate, annoy and inconvenience people with your out of office email auto-reply:</p>
<div style="padding-left: 30px;"><a title="original source" href="http://shankman.com/auto-responder-email-replies-u-iz-doin-it-wrong/" target="_blank">Auto-Responder Email replies: Ur doin it WRONG.</a></div>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Sigh.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Running <a href="http://www.helpareporter.com/">HARO</a>, I send out close to 1,600,000 million double-opt-in, requested emails every single month. Yes, you read that right. 1,600,000 emails per month, not one of which has ever been considered SPAM.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">But unlike, say, <a href="http://www.continental.com/">Continental Airlines</a>, or <a href="http://www.crateandbarrel.com/">Crate and Barrel</a>, my emails don’t come from “DONOTREPLY@continental.com” or “AUTOMATEDEMAIL@crateandbarrel.com” – When I started HARO, it was a personal mission. As such, every single HARO email you’ve ever gotten has come from my own personal email address – pe…@—nkman.com (dashes and dots put in to confuse spambots. If you get the HARO, you know my email.)</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">You know what that means? That means I know when the HARO has gone out, not because I have a little alarm, and not because my editors tell me so, but because I go from 0 to 300 unread emails (on a slow day) in a little under sixty seconds when the HARO goes out – and those emails? AUTO EMAIL RESPONDERS.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">You might think you’re being helpful by using them. In some cases, you are. Most cases, though, ur doin it wrong. Five quick rules on how to use the any kind of automatic responder on your email.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">1) If it’s an out-of-office responder, MAKE SURE THE SUBJECT LINE SAYS OUT OF OFFICE – and not “Re.” If the auto-responder says “re,” it means you’re replying to me. Auto-responders are designed to be filtered quickly – “Oh, OK, OUT OF OFFICE from John, I guess he’s out of the office.” “Re:” and then the subject I sent you means “Oh, John’s responded. Let’s see what he says about the… Oh, he’s out of the office. Idiot.” Most auto-responders are programmed to say “OUT OF OFFICE.” Don’t change this.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">2) That’s lovely that you’re on vacation. WE DON’T NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IT. If I send you an email and get back an auto-reply saying you’re “Out of the office for the next two weeks, scuba diving in the Maldives,” that means that I’M NOT, BECAUSE I HAD TO SEND THE EMAIL. So automatically, my hatred of you goes up a notch. Simple and to the point: “Out of office until 9/4. Will return your email upon my return.” And don’t try and be cute. “Hey, I could answer your email, but I can’t email you from under the sea, where I am!” I’ll find you and crimp your air-hose.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">3) Congrats, you’re on maternity leave. Once is fine, thanks. Almost EVERY email auto-responder feature understands that if you’ve emailed me once to tell me you’re out of the office, you don’t have to do it again, since logic would suggest that you’re STILL out of the office. Turning these off essentially means that EVERY SINGLE TIME I email you, or ANYONE emails you within a cc box, or anything, we’ll find out that yes, you’re still on maternity leave. For all eight thousand days of your maternity leave.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">4) The gratuitous auto-responder – AKA, the no-good-reason-for-auto-reply. Worst part of the following image is that he’s a really nice guy, and I like him! So I’ve deleted the name of this person, but I get this auto-reply three times a day. I also get it after every email correspondence I have with him. That means, if we go back and forth six times, I get 12 emails from him, six of which I have to delete. STOP IT. YOU’RE HURTING PEOPLE:</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">5) This is, hands down, the worst possible one EVER: The “I only check my email twice a day to increase productivity, and I’ll send everyone who emails me an auto-reply telling you that.” These are the people who’ve read that insane “I only work four hours a week and do it from a beach and outsource everything to small midgets in foreign countries and spend the rest of my time going on the Today Show” book.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I DON’T CARE THAT YOU’RE TRYING TO BE LIKE HIM. YOU’RE NOT HIM. Emailing me to tell me that you’re not reading my email until 4pm when it’s 9:15 in the morning and I need something from you guarantees you only ONE THING: I WILL GO TO SOMEONE ELSE FOR WHAT I NEED, AND THEY WILL GET MY BUSINESS. By the time you get around to responding to me, I’ll have paid someone else all the money I was going to give you. End of story. If you have to shut off your email because it’s interfering with your productivity, you need to learn to better manage how to live your life, and email should be the least of your worries. As a caveat: If you’re using HARO and using that rule? You might as well unsubscribe – By the time you “get aro</p>

<p>You don&#8217;t need to do a <a title="customer satisfaction survey" href="http://www.businessweek.com/managing/content/jun2009/ca20090619_272945.htm" target="_blank">customer satisfaction survey</a> to realize that if you do use an out of office auto-reply, it should still serve the person who will receive it in a way that makes them feel well served and communicates something importan.</p>
<p><strong>Everything Is Copywriting</strong></p>
<p>Consider every written communication as a form of copywriting. Here are some useful guidelines for writing emails.</p>
<p>1. Make the subject line count. Shankman&#8217;s suggestion for out of office is good, because someone can immediately read the subject and realize they&#8217;re not getting a personal, real response.</p>
<p>2. Give a way for the person to get their question answered or problem solved. If you havve a support person, a help desk, or an office number, include it.</p>

<p>KDP means you&#8217;re instantly a published author. The number of Kindle books is growing fast. You gain all the benefits of being an author right away, even if your book is a 15 or 20 page special report.</p>

<p>In the past month there are only 11 new titles, and 33 within the last 90 days. That means if you pass the editorial guidelines, your chances of making a bigger splash with a Single are bigger</p>
<p>There are just over 400 customer ratings of Kindle singles as of today.</p>
<p>And get this – there are only 123 Kindle Singles as of today.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re thinking of submitting a piece of your work of 5,000 to 30,000 words (which can truly be a book the way I teach people), what&#8217;s the process? </p>
<p><strong>The Kindle Singles Selection Process</strong></p>

<p>I remember being at a seminar one time visiting with someone I hardly ever see. At one point, her husband went into this long story retelling the beginning of the movie <em>2001: A Space Odyssey</em>.</p>
<p>He went on and on&#8230;and on&#8230;and on&#8230;honestly, I could have watched the whole segment twice by the time he finished. I had to supress the urge to wander off.</p>
<p>Now, this person is a good storyteller. I guess he simply couldn&#8217;t help himself that time! Several peole were looking around or wandering off.</p>
<p>Go ahead and laugh. You&#8217;ve been there, done that and bought the T-shirt, as the saying goes. And at a family gathering, it&#8217;s no big deal if Uncle Fred spins a long pointless tale.</p>
<p><strong>BUt you&#8217;re in business, so storytelling matters.</strong></p>
<p>If you blurt out facts or tell stories with more twists than a licorice factory, your sales will suffer.</p>

<p><strong>How do you know if you&#8217;re an effective storyteller?</strong></p>
<p>There are several indicators:</p>
<p> Whether people hang on your every word or roll their eyes when you start talking is one.</p>

<p>Life tends to go his way. He is happy and optimistic. Life is good. He feels grateful all the time.</p>
<p><em><strong>Was he just born this way, or can anyone develop passion, purpose and pizzazz?</strong></em></p>
<p>There is a tendency for people to feel a sense of lack…to feel anyone who feels good about life had an easy road with no bumps and bruises.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the typical whine: “It&#8217;s easy for people like TIM to have life go his way all the time because (insert whiny story here).”</p>
<p>So let&#8217;s look at this supposedly ever-glorious life Tim led.</p>
<p>Twice in his life, he has been threatened with losing a limb – once to illness and later to a motorcycle accident.</p>
<p>He had and then lost a lot of money. He&#8217;s been through heartbreak, financial woes, and illness as much as anyone else. </p>
<p>So no, his positive attitude didn&#8217;t come as the prize in a in a box of Cracker Jacks!</p>
<p><strong>Tim found a <a href="http://profitablestorytelling.com/message" target="_blank">Message in his mess</a> </strong></p>
<p>Like everyone with a pulse, Tim is on a <strong>hero&#8217;s journey</strong>. there are certain steps every hero in the making takes, only 1 of which is the glorious good times part!</p>
<p>He had his doubts and personal challenges to overcome, but he accepted his <strong>call to adventure</strong>.</p>
<p>The next steps along the hero&#8217;s journey are the Road of Trials.” Definitely, Tim went through a <strong><a title="Road of Trials" href="http://www.profitablestorytelling.com/personal-development/inspirational-thoughts/thought-for-the-day-on-the-joplin-tornado-does-the-wind-know-your-name/" target="_blank">Road of Trials</a>, </strong>as does any hero in the making. Nobody handed him “the perfect life, free of pain and suffering.”</p>
<p><em>Remember reading that he could be minus two limbs today?  He could have given an arm and a leg (literally) by listening to what the doctors said.</em></p>
<p>Tim could have let the doctors cut off his leg as a child. Doctors said he would never walk because of the disease. They said the treatments he would endure would be torture.</p>
<p>Yes, the therapy was horrific, and perhaps he might have escaped some pain by letting them cut it off.</p>
<p>But then, of course, he wouldn&#8217;t walk perfectly well with both legs attached today. To meet him now, you would never know what he endured.</p>
<p>A bad accident nearly cost Tim his arm, but he refused to let it go.</p>
<p>You never know what someone has been through when you meet them. So act with kindness!</p>
<p>Now, Tim is growing his own business and helping others reach their goals and dreams.</p>
<p>Thing is, he had to overcome some prejudice. He is British, not Filipino. That means he had to learn how to tell his story to the people in a way they would hear the heart behind his message.</p>
<p>Because of the economic conditions in the Philippines, the people tend to perceive themselves as the “have not&#8217;s” and foreigners as privileged.</p>
<p>So for him to be a popular guy, gaining increasing notoriety in the Philippines, is a big deal. It has been a journey!</p>

<p>Any expert goes through all the ups and downs of growing a reputation, getting articles published, and figuring out <strong>how to write a book</strong> knows the power of perseverance.</p>

<p>Outsourcing is a good idea &#8211; yet even with that, there are issues. Sure, you take unwanted tasks off your own plate, but where do you start with outsourcing?</p>
