Of Michael Jackson’s Life Story & the Road of Trials: What Can Storytelling Templates & Choice Points Change You?

Everyone is on a “hero’s journey.” The question is whether you rise to the challenge. I’ll show you how it works by sharing one small piece of Michael Jackson’s life story. I am taking you to a difficult moment in his life that shaped his future. Having his head catch fire had to be one of the most horrifying moments on his road of trials.

Michael Jackson’s life story, like yours, has critical choice points.  Imagine you experience something and see before you a fork in the road. The fork may have a number of “tines” representing a variety of responses. One choice is to curl up in a ball and whine about life throwing you a nasty curve ball. Another choice is to take that tragedy and turn it into triumph. Between, are other possibilities.

The choice points are defining moments of testing. when Jackson’s hair caught fire during a commercial shoot more than 20 years ago, he faced a choice. How would he let this experience shape his life? This is the video in which you will see his hair catch fire from a pyrotechnic malfunction.

I can only imagine how horrifying and painful that would be.

That calamity served as a choice point for Michael. I am not here to decide whether or not he rose to the challenge of awakening the hero with in him. Each person has moments along the journey of your life that test you. There is no “grade” as such; how you live your life from that moment forward determines what you take away from that stop on your road of trials.

After the calamity came skin grafts and other treatments for Michael. What he experienced definitively changed his life forever. Addiction, mental illness  and early death are notable marks along his path.

You have the choice to find the message in your mess. There is a power that comes from living through painful or difficult situations. the question is, do you live the mess — or the message?
