I’m naturally a joyful person, and even in the midst of this situation, I was aware how powerful my mindset has become and yet how I was still affected by the situation.

So much of the USA has been very cold these last days, often cold enough to break decades-old records. The Ozarks of Missouri where I live is generally fairly mild in the winter. We rarely have snow, and when we do, it generally warms up sufficiently within 2 or 3 days that the snow is gone.

This year in the unseasonably frigid weather, my pipes froze. I had a handyman out and discovered one of my pipes had split from the temperatures that hovered near zero for days. Despite doing all the things you’re supposed to do (so no need to comment on what I should have done) I lost water.

At that moment I felt so glad that I give gratitude for my home and for indoor plumbing every single day. If nothing else, I can say that I don’t take it for granted. Though I have a neighbor who let me take a shower at her place one of the days and let me fill recycled milk jugs for drinking water, it is still stressful to be without something you’re accustomed to having.

I carried water in jugs from my neighbor’s so that I and the animals had water. I had a shot glass with water for brushing my teeth and a small bowl with water for times when I wanted to clean my fingers. I warmed water on the stove to wash myself and then wipe the counter. I left dishes in the sink until I could have water again.

I am so abundantly blessed to have a home and water easily available (even though it wasn’t currently available inside my home). I could go get some and make use of it, and the water would be clean and safe to drink.

Yes – All through this time of having frozen pipes, I felt gratitude for the fact that most of the time I do have water. I also thought of how many people in our world don’t have the luxury of being able to wash a dish or your face using warm water easily from inside your home. I knew it would be a small repair bill and with warmer weather, my normal life would be easily restored. That is exactly what happened.

Having a burst pipe fixed and warmer weather restored me to my usual routine. When it was all over, I realized that despite my joyous disposition about my situation, there had been a level of stress murmuring in the background that made it harder to focus and that disrupted sleep. Having water once again lifted my spirits just as it lifted a burden.

Had I been of a different mindset, I can only imagine the disruption would have been much worse. When my relative lost her water, she made up mental horror stories of exploding pipes, gushing torrents of water freezing around her house in the cold,  and huge insurance claims. That unpleasantness never befell her, but again I was reminded how much of a difference mindset makes.

If you’re a natural worrier, you probably have a number of troubles weighing you down, robbing your joy. You’re worrying about one thing or another (or several) all the time.

If you’re more buoyant by nature, I’m sure you still feel some underlying stress from one or another concern in life.

Are you obsessed with worry over money?

So many people are obsessing about money. You can feel it when you read or hear any sort of news or even read the headlines on magazine covers at the grocery store checkstand. I don’t watch the news much (other than political commentary), but when I do catch it at someone else’s house, I am appalled at how the economy and money are portrayed. You’d think the world was homeless and destitute to hear it.

It’s hard not to feel any concern about money when you’re having trouble paying bills. It’s hard to feel abundant when you’re always playing “make the month outlast the money” and trying to build up an emergency fund. If your hours have been cut or you’re laid off, naturally it’s a major feat of mindset to be in a place of abundance.

I’ve been in situations when I had no idea how a bill would get paid, and I imagine you’ve been there too in one way or another..But what if you could effortlessly shift your thoughts and your focus and become a money magnet?

A different vision

Can you imagine what it would be like never to have a thought of worry or concern about money? My friend Pam Ragland spent early years of her life in this much-desired state. She always had enough money. It never occurred to her that she might wonder how to pay a bill, worry whether or not she could pay for an unexpected expense or buy gifts for her children. Then life threw her some curves, and suddenly, she worried about whether she could afford gasoline or food for herself and her children.

Let’s face it – life is busy. Nothing will slow down or slide out of your way so you can get your book written, grow your business, take continuiing education or whatever. You have to decide how important each aspect of your life is to you and find a way to achieve balance.

Most people think of balance like the scales of justice with a plate on the right and a plate on the

left and the goal of equally loading the plates on both sides. Does your life feel like something you can balance in that way? Do you believe there is a one-time stacking of items on either side of a scale, and when the two weigh the same, you’re balanced?

I’m here to tell you; reality is much different. It is simply not possible to alot your time between your various tasks once and have the whole system that is your life function in an effortless, balanced way.
