Simply look to what happens during any ordinary day for inspiration.

Perhaps there is something slightly out of the ordinary that occurred. This is a great basis for a story.

You are telling yourself stories constantly.

So am I, and so is everyone in the world.

Until recently, I used to tell myself a story every time I looked in the  mirror.

It went something like this:

“Uck, your body just shouldn’t be seen.”

That story came courtesy of someone I love very much (my mom) who feels that only thin bodies should be seen.

That is no longer my story.

I don’t throw nastygrams at mom for her beliefs. I simply don’t share them. Telling myself that story would not move me more deeply into my greatness. It would tear me down,

And I, a spark of divinity in human form (just as YOU are a spark of divinity wearing a human
form) do not deserve to tear myself down.

Here are some examples of stories you could be telling yourself today:

• “I have no will power.”
• “I’m so bad at _____”
• “I hate my butt.”

Those examples are storytelling techniques used to tear down and destroy. Bad “head stuff.”

Those examples might not be your head stuff – your stories that you replay inside your head -
but chances are that you tell yourself all kinds of stories about how you’re not good enough, not smart enough, too this or too that.

Each time you reinforce a story about you, what happens is that you create a deep rut.

And, if you’ve ever been in a deep rut along a road, y ou know how hard it ist o get out of  a rut.

With self mastery comes much more empowering storytelling.

You could also be telling yourself great stories about yourself, such as:

“I get what I want.”

“I love my life!”

“I make thins happen.”

“Every day I do what I was put here to do.”

So look inside and ask yourself: “Are the stories I tell myself moving me toward my goals and making my dreams happen? –

…or are the stories I repeat to myself moving me deeper and deeper into a rut that tears me down?

You are a bright shining light with no equal, just as you are!

You don’t need to “be better” or “try harder.”

I want you to awaken to the hero I KNOW you are designed to be by your birthright as a powerful being having a human experience.

As I heard a minister express it once, “God don’t make no junk.”

But how do you stop the nastygrams to yourself from replaying inside your head all day?

It simply takes practice. Not “hard work” or anything arduous. It takes awakening to your awesomeness and surrounding yourself with what moves you toward living your awesomeness and letting the awful fall away like dead skin cells.

Developing a powerful mindset is a big part of  awakening the hero within you and living the life
of your dreams.

A good mindset helps you gently turn away from the unhealthy rut and choose the kind of story that empowers you.

If your head isn’t “on right” – so to speak – then you are putting obstacles in your own way.

It all started with an iPhone

March was when our son celebrated his 17th birthday, and we got him an iPhone. He just loved it. Who wouldn’t.

I celebrated my birthday in July, and my wife made me very happy when she bought me an iPad.

Our daughter’ s birthday was in August so we got her an iPod Touch.

My wife celebrated her birthday in September so I got her an iRon.

It was around then that the fight started…

What my wife failed to recognize is that the iRon can be integrated into the home network with the iWash, iCook and iClean.

This inevitably activates the iNag reminder service.

I should be out of the hospital next week!!

When you want to commemorate the important moments of life, how do you do it?

Do you take pictures? Shoot videos? Scrapbook? Create sculptures? Own a charm bracelet? 

No matter what medium you choose, the images and the meaning behind them together tell the story.

Vision Board

One example of visual storytelling is creating a vision board. This is a collection of pictures, symbols, drawings or other images that represent the life you are creating. If you saw the Secret Movie, you may recall John Asaraf’s example of how he put the house he desired onto a vision board and when he took it out of a box years later, he realized he had indeed claimed the home of his desire.

Here is a vision board I created for myself that uses 8 pictures:

This vision board is called, ”My Life of BLiss.”

This is an example of visual storytelling, because each photo represents part of the story I am creating in my life.

Here is what each photo means, left to right: I touch every life on the planet in a positive way. I ride in a hot air balloon and soar high above the ground. I swim with wild dolphins, take a cruise to Alaska and 1 in the Greek Isles, meet giant tortoises in the Galapagos Islands, visit sacred sites in Hawaii, appear on the cover of Success Magazine, and have many other amazing adventures, all in a sacred manor, in harmony with all of life. This is why visual storytelling represents one of many storytelling techniques

Pandora Charm Bracelet

Another visual storytelling example is a charm bracelet. The Pandora Bracelets are getting a lot of atention from stars in Hollywood. Pandora just sponsored a holiday-themed skating special. The various charms all help the wearer tell a story.

Imagine wearing symbols of your cherished memories in the form of jewelry. That way, you have the reminders with you, and you get to tell the stories of what those symbols mean to you and how they relate to your life.

For example,  Pandora charm bracelets empower you to select charms taht represent whatever is important to you.

What are good stoytelling techniques for visual storytelling?

1. Choose a theme. The theme may be a montage of your life or it may be more specific, such as “my kids” or “the power of love in my life.” The theme stands as your intention.

2. Decide on what elements convey the theme. If you’re taking photographs, consider the most powerful images to convey your intention.

3. Create a feeling of movement or “something happening.” Even though photographs are “frozen” moments in time, each can still convey a sense of action or movement. Movement will capture your imagination and the attention of the story receiver no matter what medium.

4. Share the story in whatever way feels right to you. Let it be a conversation  starter and an opportunity to open yourself.

5. Recognize that learning storytelling techniques and developing your skill – whether in visual storytelling or some other form of storytelling – is a journey. It’s mostly about opening yourself to be aware of the stories all around you.

I remember being at a seminar one time visiting with someone I hardly ever see. At one point, her husband went into this long story retelling the beginning of the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

He went on and on…and on…and on…honestly, I could have watched the whole segment twice by the time he finished. I had to supress the urge to wander off.

Now, this person is a good storyteller. I guess he simply couldn’t help himself that time! Several peole were looking around or wandering off.

Go ahead and laugh. You’ve been there, done that and bought the T-shirt, as the saying goes. And at a family gathering, it’s no big deal if Uncle Fred spins a long pointless tale.

BUt you’re in business, so storytelling matters.

If you blurt out facts or tell stories with more twists than a licorice factory, your sales will suffer.

How do you know if you’re an effective storyteller?

There are several indicators:

 Whether people hang on your every word or roll their eyes when you start talking is one.

Sales conversions is another. If you find that people don’t turn from prospects into customers even though you have terrific products or services and are great at twhat you do, poor storytelling techniques could be at the root!,

Another way poor storytelling shows up is hiding behind credentials. Nobody will be wowwed by your 15 certifications in alternative healing. THey’ll be wowwed by how you solve their problems!

Still one more way bad storytelling shows up in poor conversions is hiding behind a persona. Sometimes people want to pay me to write their story, but it’s a fake story. They want to hide behind something false. People will always pick up on that.

Steve Jobs, who never finished college, gave the commencement address for Stanford‘s 2005 graduating class. “Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation,” he quipped.

His speech is a brilliant demonstration of storytelling as a tool of transformation.

He told 3 stories from his own life. The first had to do with connecting the dots.

Did you ever know the connection between calligraphy and computers?  You can read or watch his address for that trivia.

What stands out most for me in his story about connecting the dots are these inspirational quotes: Emphasis is mine, to guide you.

You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.

So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.

This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

Jobs didn’t graduate college. He even got fired from the very company he founded. Then he contracted the cancer that killed him this week.

Yet none of those things stopped him living his purpose in life.

Blessings are treasures hidden in life’s challenges.
