We’re excited to introduce KDP Select – a new option dedicated to KDP authors and publishers worldwide, featuring a fund of $500,000 in December 2011 and at least $6 million in total for 2012! 

KDP Select gives you a new way to earn royalties, reach a broader audience, and use a new set of promotional tools.

Here’s how KDP Select works:

When you make any of your titles exclusive to the Kindle Store for at least 90 days, those with US rights will automatically be included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library and can earn a share of a monthly fund. 

The monthly fund for December 2011 is $500,000 and will total at least $6 million in 2012. 

If you haven’t checked it out already, the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library is a collection of books that eligible US Amazon Prime members can borrow for free once a month with no due dates.

You’ll also now have access to a new set of promotional tools, starting with the option to promote your KDP Select-enrolled titles for FREE for up to 5 days every 90 days.

How your share of the monthly fund is calculated:

Your share of the monthly fund is based on your enrolled titles’ share of the total number of borrows across all participating KDP titles in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. 

For example, if total borrows of all participating KDP titles are 100,000 in December and your book was borrowed 1,500 times, you will earn $7,500 in additional royalties from KDP Select in December. 

Enrolled titles will remain available for sale to any customer in the Kindle Store and you will continue to earn your regular royalties on those sales.

What this means to you:

KDP Select gives you access to a whole new source of royalties and readers- you not only benefit from a new way of making money,

but you also get the chance to reach even more readers by getting your book in front of a growing number of US Amazon Prime customers: readers and future fans of your books that you may have not had a chance to reach before!

Additionally, the ability to offer your book for free will help expand your worldwide reader base.

How to enroll:

KDP Select is available for titles participating in both the 70% and 35% royalty options.  You can immediately start by enrolling a single title, your whole catalog, or anything in between.

If you’re interested in enrolling a title that’s already uploaded, simply click “Enroll” next to the book in your Bookshelf. To enroll multiple titles that are already uploaded, select the boxes next to any number of titles, then click “Actions” and choose “Enroll these books in KDP Select.” The titles you choose will be enrolled immediately.

If you’re interested in enrolling a new title, simply check the “Enroll this book in KDP Select” box while submitting details about your book and proceed to publish the book as you normally would. For new titles, enrollment takes effect once the book is available for sale on our website.

The plan is to turn that freebie lead into a buyer and ultimately into someone who does business with you long term.

I know Amazon.com won’t like what I am about to say, because the biggest reason for letting authors publish a book on Kindle is most authors who publish on Kindle generate sales of 3–5 of the pricey devices.

Why? Because even though every Kindle book shows the available free Kindle apps right there on the page, people don’t look, don’t read and and don’t pay attention.

Here’s how the sales happen.

Let’s take a hypothetical yet typical author named Carol. She finds out how to self-publish a book on Kindle. She follows the simple path to publishing, and in just a couple days, she is a published author with her first Kindle book.

She is so excited that she buys a Kindle so she can read her own book on it. Chalk up one more Kindle sold.

Then she tells everyone she knows (rightfully so) that she is a published Kindle author, and her family and friends get ALL excited too (again, rightfully so!).

Her mom, sister, and two other family members all go and buy a Kindle so they can read their family superstar’s book on Kindle. Chalk another 4  Kindle Reader sales.

Her best friend, 2 ladies from church and 1 mom from carpool all go get one too. Chalk up 4 more sales of the Kindle Reader.

Carol has sold 9 books in this transaction, perhaps bringing her enough revenue to take her family out for ice cream cones.

Amazon.com is the big winner with over $1,000 in revenue generated simply because they allow authors to self-publish.

This hypothetical example resulted in 9 Kindle Reader sales since our Carol is so magnetic, but typically, friends and family of authors who self publish a book on Kindle DO cause sales of the device..

Self Publishing Kindle Authors Mean A Few Dollars for the Author but Huge Revenue to Amazon.com

People tend to ASSUME they need to own a Kindle in order to read a Kindle book, even though every page with a Kindle book shows all the free Kindle apps available right there on the screen.

Every author who will publish a book on Kindle generates an average of 5 Kindle Reader sales. Not to mention all the other Kindle books and accessories that that will result all from authors like Carol.

Yes –  Even though there are a half dozen FREE Kindle apps so anyone (except blind people) can read Kindle books on their PC, Mac, iPad, and iPhone.

People simply assume you HAVE to own a Kindle reader to read a Kindle book, even with evidence to the contrary easily visible on every Kindle-related page.

Instant VIP Success Element 2: a way to collect leads

many authors fail to include a way to collect contact information from readers.  When someone buys a book from a place like Amazon.com, you as the author are not there at point of sale. You’re not using your own shopping cart, and so you do not have the buyer’s contact information.

A way around this, and a critical success element in any book, is to include a link to a page where you collect the buyer’s first name and email address.

It’s not enough to send people to your homepage or say, “want more? visit my website at blablabla.com” .You need a specific direction and a specific reason.

Write the Lead Out could, for example, include a statement like this: “Get writing prompts and inspirational quotes for writers at (link).” make sure there is a specific tool, gift or resource that the reader will receive.

And it shouldn’t just be the dot-com or your blog. It should be a specific page with compelling reasons why to opt in and the form.

Instant VIP Success Element 3: Strong Ending

Imagine you’re a reader of a book, which I know you have been many times. But now you are going to look through the eyes of a marketer.

The author has promised you a solution. She has taken you by the hand and walked you through steps, a process or a way to get relief. Then all of a sudden you read, “Some final thoughts.”

Although this may not consciously be going through your mind, you are already pulling back because you feel the author dropping your hand. “We’re done here,” is the message you receive.

Statements like “in conclusion,” “finally” or “the end” say that the matter is closed and there is no reason  for you to continue.

The end of the book is the opening of a new relationship .

You want the reader to come back to you for more. If you close the relationship, this will not happen.

Instead, your closing should convey that there is more to come.

I’d rather you use YOUR words, YOUR articles, and YOUR expertise – AND publish a book fast!

Is that OK with you?  (that’s NOT a rhetorical question!)

Focus on SERVING Your reader

If he suggested the would-be author reworked those pre-written articles  and added some real “meat” to them PLUS add some of your own articles, that wouldn’t be the worst way to put a book together fast. It wouldn’t be my best recommendation, but it would work.

Be careful about anything you assemble, because slapping junk together and calling it a book is not a good business move.

You want your focus always to be upon serving the reader a truly good solution. Because in that way, you cause people to want more of what you offer –  bigger and better solutions to their big problems!

While anyone can visit www.KDP.amazon.com, sign in with your Amazon.com login and get published in 2 days, there are so many things you can do to make sure that your ideal reader does MORE business with you.

These aspects of how to write a book that boosts your business include:

• a great, attention-grabbing title
• An appealing cover
• Good “copy” that describes the book
• The right categories
• elements inside the book that drive the reader to your website – and to YOU!
• and, of course, more.

Having your book on Kindle or in any other format is not just about being able to point customers to a link to make a sale.

Sure, you’ll make some money from the book, but that’s just pocket change, really. This is where I see so many authors get tripped up.

Never focus on the book royalties as a source of income. You’ll be chasing crumbs if you do.

“How do I publish my book on Kindle?”

It’s so easy a blind woman can do it (Yes, I did it myself and I’m blind!)

And I’ll tell you how to do it in a minute.

First I want to mention that you have a bigger issue than simply “HOW do I publish my book on Kindle?”

In a post about author mentoring, I told a story about a woman I call Cheryl. She had dreams and published her book (in print in her case) but she had absolutely nothing besides the book.

You’ll never get rich off a book (unless you’re already a household name like John Grisham, Oprah or Donald Trump).  So you can run off and publish a book on Kindle for free, but what do you have AFTER the book?

Yeah, you’ll make more per book because it’s electronic and not print.  But if you’re like Cheryl with no or little web presence, no or little reputation and no or little business behind the book, you’re dooming yuorself to failure before you begin.

That said, now I’ll talk to you and answer that question.

Amazon Kindle is a digital publishing service that lets authors and publishers make their books and other materials available to people who use the Kindle reader.

It’s incredibly easy to publish a book on Kindle.

Before you rush over to the link, though, make sure you understand a couple of things.

It’s free to publish a book on Kindle.

You get to set the royalty rate and price for the book.
